The jewel in our beery crown at Bacchanalia is that our Mill Road shop has cask conditioned draught beer to take away.  The way it works is you either bring in your own container, or we can supply 2 pint hoppers for 35p, or 4 pint reusable jugs for £1 deposit.  Our beers are focused mostly on local breweries & quality is up most in our selection.  The beers are gravity dispensed straight from the cooled 9 gallon firkin, so the beer is in the best possible condition.

Polypins & more

If you are having a party/bbq/gathering of any description, or are just very thirsty we do sell real ale in larger sizes as well.  There are 3 sizes, a whole 9 gallon firkin (72pts), a 36 pint poly pin or an 18 pint demi pin.  There are 2 different ways you can buy your beer; ‘live’ with sediment, or bright, poured by us without sediment.  The live version is undergoing secondary ferment in the container & will need to settle for between 1 or 2 days (depending on size or beer type). The ‘live’ version can be drunk for about 4 or 5 days if you keep it nice & cool.  The bright version is equally as tasty but has to be collected on the same day or the day before & will only be good for a couple of days.  The benefit of ‘bright’ beer is that it is very easy to manage, you pick it up, plonk it in the corner of the party & drink.  This is the version we sell most of for parties.  The ‘live’ version is very popular around Christmas.  You pick it up the day before Christmas eve, set it up & drink real ale throughout the festive period.  We generally do not do ‘bright’ whole 9 gallon firkins, but you can of course have as many poly pins as you like.

Why do we do it?

No matter how well the brewer translates their beer into the bottle the experience & quality is never the same as beer from the cask.  Tasting a beer is not just about the flavour (although of course this is important), it’s the mouthfeel & the conditioning, the nose, the body, in short the whole package that’s important.  That’s why we go to the extra effort of ‘cellaring’ the firkins, letting them settle on the stillage, spraying beer all over the ceiling, keeping them nice & cool & storing the empties, to bring the ultimate pint.
